Let's talk about books! Linky (with a BLOG only FREEBIE!)

I'm linking up with the fabulous Deanna Jump, talking all about books we love!
This is a weekly linky to introduce books that we love to each other.
This week happens to include a freebie sampler, but I can't guarantee I'll include a freebie each week this summer! ;)

The book I chose for this week is written by an author Hunger Games fans will know!
Did you know Suzanne Collins ALSO wrote a picture book?
Click the picture to head over to Amazon- the paperback version is only $5.39!!

This rhyming story is about a little boy named Charlie who is "plugged in" with technology at all times.

That is.... until one day his tech empire comes tumbling down when a thunderstorm hits!

After he realizes his whole world lost power, Charlie reacts to his challenge in a particular way..

I won't spoil the ending for you, but he gets into a little trouble with his sister and one of her dolls. In the end, he realizes he can have fun being "unplugged" from technology as well!

The illustrations in this story are nothing short of amazing.
I LOVE how Mike Lester detailed Charlie so beautifully.
You HAVE to check this book out!
The kids will LOVE it, I promise!
Not only is Charlie's technology empire relevant, but it's pretty much a guarantee we've all lost power (at least once!) or reacted to a situation in a way that can only be described as undesirable.

I'll have an entire week's worth of activities included in a pack coming to my TpT shop soon, but I wanted to leave you with a 11 page sampler pack.
Here are just a FEW pages from the freebie!

I included standards posters to review the I can statements with students.

I use a TON of partner talk to give each kiddo the opportunity to become involved in the text and share their thoughts with a friend. I included a few freebies in relation to partner turn and talk, also!

As part of Day 1 of a close read of this text, I included 3 discussion questions.
I would have students discuss each question separately with their partner and then share a few responses.

I also included the 1st responding to reading prompt I would use on the 1st day of instruction.
I also included a tri-fold pamphlet that contains 5 questions based on the text as a fun way to respond to the story throughout the week.

Stay tuned for a full unit in the coming weeks, as well as a new book talk each Tuesday!

  2. I have a friend that always has her class try to turn off technology for a week and keep a journal of what they do instead. It's harder for their parents than it is for them! Great recommendation- I added it to my list! Thanks!
